This TED Talk discussed haptics technology, technology we use with our hands. Our sense of touch is very important. We use this sense every day of our lives. Our sense of touch is broken down into two categories: tactile and kinesthetic. Tactile is vibrations, pressure and temperature. Kinesthetic deals with how our body is moving and force around us. Haptics technology is meant to fool us, according to Katherine Kuchenbecker. As your body travels through the real world, engineers are working on technology that can measure that motion and present to us sensations overtime that we would feel if we were in the real world. Engineers are designing a pen that measures vibrations, force, and speed. The pen is designed to record this data and programed with a computer software that allows users to draw on a touchscreen and feel the exact movements of something they touched previously with the pen. Another piece of technology engineers are working on is an accelerometer that can be attached to a dental tool to help dentists feel for cavities.
